The
second pitch on the Old Man of Stoer
Sea stack climbing in Scotland can be exposed, remote, exciting and atmospheric. For a taste of the experience check our short movie (below) we put together after a trip to the Am Buacaille stack.
Situated on the Stoer Peninsula near Lochinver, it is one of the classic sea stacks, alongside others like Am Buachaille at Sandwood Bay and the most famous of all, The Old Man of Hoy in the Orkney Islands (see below).
The day at the Old Man of Stoer involves a swim (for some brave soul) and a tyrolean traverse to the base of the climb. The most popular route by far is the Original Route, VS, 75m. There are also other routes on the stack, two E1s and an E2.
An impressive 55m abseil gets you back to the base of the stack and if you are clever with your tyrolean, no need to swim home. What a great adventure.

Am Buachaille at
Sandwood Bay on the far north west coast north of Ullapool is
another spectacular 65 meter sea stack and great adventure. This
stack is slightly harder as everyone in the group needs to swim the
short channel to the base of the stack and the climbing is slightly
more technical.

This climb includes everything: a beautiful walk to a stunning and remote location; a walk around a rugged coast; a swim out to the stack; a exhilarating climb; a 50m abseil; and, some breathtaking views. But words can't paint the picture, so we've put together a small video of a trip we made in 2008.
The Old Man of Hoy in the Orkney Islands remains one of the most sought-after classic climbs of the UK. Remote and challenging, the climb takes in five pitches up the landward face using wide cracks and a spectacular finishing corner pitch. Harder again, graded E1, the climb has an awkward second pitch. Unlike the Old Man of Stoer and Am Buachaille, nobody has to get wet to reach the base of the stack as a small narrow causeway links Orkney’s most famous landmark with the steep shoreside.
